Catherine Breillat, speaking through translator Robert Gray (left), entertained the opening night SF International Film Festival audience with answers to their questions and those of San Francisco Film Society executive director Graham Leggat (right). She explained she loves to work with non-professional actors, saying, with characteristic vigor, "After I work with them, they belong to me," and compared the discovery and use of new talent to another art form. "A real painter mixes his own colors," she said, "He doesn’t go to a tube that’s readymade." Particularly enjoyed was her anecdote about teaching her star, Fu’ad Aït Aattou, how to perform the proper kiss on Asia Argento—by pulling Argento aside and demonstrating it herself.
