Head, not talking
When I asked why Johnson himself wasn’t interviewed directly in the film, Rosenthal responded, “Oh, he was. There were many hours of filmed interviews, but we realized that Daniel literally couldn’t narrate this film. He couldn’t remember most of what had happened to him.” As a result of the direct interview sequences ending up on the cutting room floor, the film breaks away from the tedious structures often used in a traditional documentary about a living artist. It is told through the pieces collected in the wake of a crazy life. (Photo and text by Tom Erikson)
